In partnership with NBA star Damian Lillard and 2K Foundations, the Boys and Girls Club of Oakland’s basketball court received a complete refurbishment with an original art installation by Oakland-based artist, Ashleigh Sumner. Over its eighty-year history, the gymnasium was a home to many NBA legends in their youth including the great Bill Russell. Sumner would design and install two murals implementing collage, silkscreen and spray paint directly to the maplewood court.

“It was incredibly appealing to me to create a piece that was truly interactive and physically accessible to the community of Oakland; a mural that could be jumped on, ran over and literally sweat upon. Art and basketball intersect in so many metaphoric ways. To me, they most powerfully share a common currency - they are both international languages that have the ability to bring people together despite perceived differences.”
